Apple TV: We bought it, we tried it, and here is the veredict…

Here at Genius at Everything we are very into technology, and we love getting our hands over all the new devices that are released into the market, and then sharing with you our most objective opinions about them. Today is the time for the new Apple TV:

Ok, first: What is this little black box? Well, it is a complete multimedia center, where you can rent and watch movies from the iStore and Netflix, open YouTube and Vimeo, listen to your music in iTunes, stream your computer’s photo library and much, much more!

1.- AirPlay y AirPlay Mirroring.

What is AirPlay? It’s a technology that allows us to transmit the audio or video signal from our iDevices (and even from our Mac Computers) into the Apple TV, thus making it possible to use a HD TV to visualize the contents or hear the music. All you need to do is connect your Apple TV and the iDevices/Computer to the same Wi-Fi network, and then selecting AirPlay on the device.

On devices like the iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S there is an extra feature: you can actually duplicate the screen of your device, so you can see everything with much more details.

2.- HD Movies rent

To activate this function, you need and Apple ID and one of two: a registered credit card, or available balance in your account; this last option is for those who buy iTunes cards.

The collection of movies may vary depending of the country where you live, but in general it’s good. They have some just-released movies, they have classics, they even have some artistic movies. You pay about 3-5 dollars and you can then watch the movie unlimited times within the next 48 hours. You can also register into Netflix and have access to a much greater movie collection.

3.- Audio and video set up for your parties!

Lets suppose you have a big party and you want to watch the new music video that you downloaded into your iDevice, or listen to a certain song that you can’t find anywhere else outside YouTube. It would be a complete mess if you need to get a cable, turn on your computer, search the video…you got the idea right? Well, Apple TV makes this easier than ever! You just need to connect your iDevice or your computer wirelessly to the Apple TV, and hit the play button!

As you can see, even though these applications are really good, they are few, but many functionalities will be added in the near future. Just imagine the possibilities…

Is it worth to buy it?

If you have at least one iDevice and an Apple Computer, the answer is yes. The Apple TV is an excellent complement for Apple products, costing only 99 USD. If you don’t have an iDevice, we recommend you to save your money for something else, as you would be paying for functionalities you won’t use.
